after that ym conversation with jeline
i was telling jeline the other day how as we get older we get more certain of what we want. on one hand, it's good because we can start early and focus all our energy on what we really want instead of wandering around aimlessly, poking around in hopes of hitting upon something we can settle on.
one girl who got married early reasoned, she knew she wanted to marry this guy eventually and have his kids too so why wait? my tita and her husband who got married recently is trying to get pregnant quick because they're both a bit mature and if they wait any longer, they'd be in their 60's when their kids graduate from college.my youngest tita who is five years older than me got married when she was only 22 despite my grandparents' objection. and while things may not always be wonderful and fine, i know she's very happy.
jeline asked me if this isn't limiting ourselves unnecesarily, which brings me to my other point. knowing what we want with terrifying certainty is confining ourselves and leaves little room for our mistakes. and we all know how frustration and disappointment are more potent when concentrated in a smaller space. is it really right to turn your back on a prospect you have but you think you do not want for a dream you want but don't know if you'll ever have? i am due for a role rotation next year and while there are other posts to apply outside of my current team that are more apt for what i have studied in college, i am actually thinking of staying because i have set my sight steadfastly on what i know i want.i just hope i get it.
stubborness is both a blessing and a curse. on one hand, it highlights a strength of will and conviction, on the other hand, it makes it difficult for us to let go. how do we distinguish between the things we can control and those that we think we should be able to control?
one of my officemate tells me his girlfriend now didn't even like him at first. in fact, among her suitors, he was at the bottom of her list but he persisted because he knew she was the one.and now, they're celebrating their first year together.he tells me, it's the end that matters.if annabelle rama gave up on eddie guttierez, we wouldn't a have a ruffa guttierez, and that would've made the world a better place. penelope never gave up on odysseus and despite all odds, she remained faithful to him.
meanwhile, a guy has had the biggest crush on my friend for almost a decade and he still has to move past the friend boundary.he picks her up and drives her home even at the most inconvenient times, drops by their house with presents for her entire family and emails/texts/calls her everyday. but my friend sees him as nothing more than just a friend. another guy who she's known for 1/3 of the time has yet to make a move officially(even if it was obvious to everyone else that he likes her) and my friend is already obviously, positively giddy and happy about it.you can't fir swuare pegs into round holes.kung hindi ukol, hindi bubukol.haha.unrequited love.who doesn't love indulging in this dra-mah?literature, history and our personal experiences are testaments to this.
but where does these all leave us? i think there's nothing wrong with being too certain of what we want as long as it's what's right and best for us.because even if the lessons are necessary, the experience costs us something and failing still sucks.some people find this early on while others have to search a little longer.and how do we know it's right?well, that's what we're here for - to figure it out.gudlak.i just hope whatever it is we seek will give us lasting happiness, help us find contentment and move us to be better people.
