finally...

after an almost 24-hour session, the house has voted to junk the impeachment complaint. 158 yes and 51 no, those in favor of junking it overwhelming the no votes by almost thrice. i hope that shuts them up for good. last week, in up, i saw one of the biggest non-sequitur printed across a banner: "for the good of the country, gloria resign" in big bold letters. one, the statement is too simplistic, as if implying that all the country's problem can be summed up in one neat statement. self-preservation is imperative especially in a country that struggles to survive each day, barely making enough to pay for the debt it has incurred. and of course, pointing fingers has evolved into a sophisticated art form. everyday, i hear people complain that the government isn't doing enough or that our politicians aren't working for us. true, there maybe a shortage of jobs and the economy is challenging but come to think of it, which country isn't battling the same problems? we know this but what are we doing to help remedy the situation, to help ourselves? rally in the streets and in the process cause senseless traffic, disrupt business and scare away investors? if we spent half the time complaining, whining and rallying into making ourselves more marketable, more into the kind of employee that companies would want to hire, maybe, just maybe, that job wouldn't be so elusive. i would like to think that hard work and relentless, unyielding determination is still the best antidote for whatever economic malady.
two, it irks me to hear politicians acuse us of being apathetic. apathetic? a country known for toppling a tyrant and moron with mass appeal with two successful people power and a less than successful third. so when people refuse to rally behind an ill-motivated cause, it's called apathy and not sense? i refuse to believe that we are apathetic or that we've given up hope completely. i hope, i think, that this is a country fast learning to think for itself, to recognize a desperate attempt to wrench power and more importantly to believe that the best hope for change is still within ourselves.
what about the president? yes, i think she might have attempted to cheat, maybe even succeeded at it. but the evidence, which the opposition claims is strong, fails to completely prove without a shadow of a doubt what they try to intimate. but more importantly, i also think that she won, maybe with a smaller margin, but she won, fair and square. and this is what her detractors refuse to accept, especially those who have spurred fpj to run for the presidency. but more than this, the question of succession should arroyo step down is still, i think, an even bigger issue. some say it should, logically, be de castro. but would the opposition accept this especially since legarda still insists she has been cheated as well. after impeaching arroyo, will they attempt to unseat de castro next? and will they continue this process of unseating until someone from their own ranks takes the helm? others are proposing a transitionary government with roces and representatives from civil society comprising the core group, or as they call it the caretaker group. and who should comprise this little group but their allies and people from their camp. what persists to surface, despite the opposition's attempt to sugar-coat and justify, is an attempt to grab power.
frankly, what bothers me about the past few presidents we've had is that they all had children who had illusions of showbiz stardom and firm belief in their acting/singing/dancing talent. With the exception of kris, which is debatable, i think showbiz would've been better off without them. I dread to think what would happen if de venecia (hello chris de venecia, la lopez's twin) or edi gil won (i love you papa...) and their children would attempt to launch their showbiz career. lord, help us.but maybe we should think about the children and their career plans when we vote for our next president. after all, where would these kids get these illusions (delusions) of grandeur but from the parents who raised them? look at arroyo and estrada who both have sons pretending to be action stars, they've been a subject for impeachment.it's a good thing ramos' daughters knew where to tow the line before someone screamed for the dad's head just to get rid of them. hehe.
having said all these, i think i will go back to sleep or at least attempt to. i still have toma session before work later. hehe.
